Why should the province even run a public transport service?

STC is a crown corporation, wholly owned by the citizens of Saskatchewan. It was formed in 1946 to provide transit services for people across the province, and still provided this as an essential service to many thousands of people in the province. We’ve always been a small population covering a large geographical area.

STC has served many small communities in both passenger and freight services, places where the private sector will not go.

The freight part of the business (which made money) subsidized the transport portion of the passenger service (which did not). However, the passenger part of STC ensured people had safe, reliable transportation to most of the locations in the province. Given the temperatures in Saskatchewan, having reliable transportation is a necessity.
